We love Guacamole as much as anyone, but sometimes we want an appetizer that our Tortilla Chips can scoop up with all their might. Enter this chunky, fresh and easy avocado salsa recipe! It’s just as easy to make as guacamole, and possibly even more versatile. We love to serve it as a quick summer appetizer — pair with Margaritas, if you really want to make your friends happy — but it’s also the best taco topper we know and would go with basically any of our favorite taco recipes.

Avocado Salsa Ingredients

  • Avocados. The star of the show! Make sure that your avocados are ripe and ready. At the store, always give avocados a very gentle squeeze — you should feel some yield. Being able to determine ripeness is also a skill to develop over time. If you’re shopping the same day you’ll make the avocado salsa, opt for over-ripe as opposed to underripe. If you’ve got a few days, though, underripe avocados will continue to ripen on the counter.

  • Tomatoes. We use Roma tomatoes because they’re a hybrid that’s generally not super juicy. While juicy tomatoes are great for making a Caprese Salad or juicy Tomato Salad, for avocado salsa we actually don’t want to use a tomato that will release a whole lot of liquid.

  • Red onion. Dice the red onion up as finely as you can, since it has a powerful sharpness.

  • Jalapeño. Be sure to remove the seeds so that you just get a nice mild heat. If you’re making our avocado salsa recipe for a party that includes little kids, you may opt to leave out the jalapeño.

  • Cilantro. As always, if you have the gene that makes cilantro taste soapy, it’s OK to skip it! But we love it.

  • A lime. Not only will lime juice give the salsa a delicious zing, lime juice helps prevent the avocados from browning too quickly, keeping your avocado salsa a fresh, appetizing shade of green.

  • Fresh garlic. Of course!

  • Spices: chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, salt and pepper

How To Make Avocado Salsa

  1. Cut everything up! You’ll need to pit the avocados, and remove the seeds from the jalapeños and tomatoes, so give yourself a little time and a super sharp knife. Dice the onion as finely as you can.

  2. Your work is mostly done! Toss everything together in a bowl and…

  3. Season the avocado salsa! The measurements we’ve included are what we think tastes best, but you can adjust to your liking. Leave out the cilantro or jalapeño, double up on the avocados — make it yours!

  4. Serve!

Avocado Salsa Serving Suggestions

Avocado salsa usually gets gobbled up immediately in our homes. Folks stand at the ready with their tortilla chips (store bought or homemade tortilla chips) in hand as the recipe comes together and as soon as it’s finished, people are digging in! But it goes well with a lot of dishes. Here are a few ways to enjoy your avocado salsa:

  • As a taco topper! We think avocado salsa goes especially well with fish tacos like our Spicy Fish Tacos or Grilled Tilapia Tacos.

  • Over fish as a condiment! Try it with our Baked Salmon.

  • On top of a burger! Try spooning some leftover avocado salsa on to your Black Bean Burger, and it just might make a vegan out of you (at least for one meal!)
