Caramelized Onion Dip Recipe

Caramelized onion dip anyone? Our homemade version outdoes anything store bought and is the perfect dip for your next gathering.

We’ve been wanting to do a caramelized onion dip for some time now, because regardless of all it’s lacking in the health department, it remains one of our favorite recipes to grace any party table or buffet.

Caramelized French Onion Dip 1

We’ve taken sweet onions, cooked them to tender perfection, and then mixed those caramelized bits of heaven with cream cheese, sour cream (I told you it wasn’t healthy) and fresh herbs and spices. The result is the best chip and veggie dip, delicious sandwich spread, and the most celebrated snack centerpiece at any football game. While it’s not the prettiest mixture we’ve ever put into a bowl, it just might be the most delicious and it’s guaranteed to win you a few friends.

How to make the best caramelized onion dip:

Last Fourth of July, Holly and I found ourselves at a BBQ together going back for 2nd and 3rd servings of one really tasty onion dip. We finally admitted defeat and just stood over the buffet table, dipping straight into the bowl. When we asked a fellow guest for her recipe, naturally “Lipton’s Onion Soup” was her response. That little packet, when mixed with a tub of sour cream, produces a French Onion Dip that’s totally addicting.

As much as we loved that dip, when Holly and I set out to recreate our own version we were determined not to use any premixed seasoning packets, but keep all of that delicious onion flavor. Could we do it? Turns out yes, we could and the results were even better than we’d imagined.

It’s all about the Onions.

The sweet caramelized flavor from onions that gives this dip its most delectable signature flavor is only achieved through a very slow and methodical process of cooking the onions. Don’t be intimidated. A good skillet, some thinly sliced onions, a heavy pat of butter, low heat and time (lots of time) is all you’ll need. If you’ve never caramelized onions before, you’ll be amazed at the flavor this process produces. The end result is onions that are sweet as candy than make anything they’re added to instantly 10 times more delicious. We love to add them to these quesadillas, into this soup, or even on top of this burger, among many other things.

How long does french onion dip last?

Jarred dips, like Lay’s French Onion Dip, can last for a week or two, but that’s due to its preservatives and additives. Our fresh and homemade version is good for about 5 days, and to be completely honest, it just gets better with time.

So, now for the verdict: is homemade onion dip better than store bought? Yes. Absolutely yes! Does this make it healthier? Not really. Should you make it anyway for your next party or sporting event? You betcha. A little splurge now and then never hurt anybody, and this dip is worth the indulgence, we promise.
