Italian Sausage Sandwiches: It’s Kinda All About the Sauce

The complete and total deliciousness of this Italian sausage hero comes at you from a lot of directions—the juicy roasted sausage, peppers and onions, the lightly-toasted hoagie rolls, and maybe most of all the creamy, lightly sharp sauce that coats everything. What makes the best Italian sausage sandwich sauce ever? Just four simple ingredients are all you need:

  • Mayonnaise. Of course! What’s a meaty sausage sandwich without mayo?
  • Whole grain mustard. We like both the look, texture and flavor of whole grain mustard—the kind that has visible mustard seeds in it.
  • Honey. A hint of sweet is always a good call. It’ll bring out the natural sweetness of the bell peppers and onions.
  • Soy sauce. Just a little bit for an umami burst.

OMGosh so easy and a huge hit!! After working late, pulled it together easily and served it for dinner to a bunch of 20 year olds. I looked like a gourmand and even my husband told me this recipe is a keeper. Thank you so much!

Really delicious and so easy to throw together! I added black pepper before cooking and it was great. We are going to try this recipe again with hot Italian sausage too.
    Thank you for sharing!

Thanks Gretta, we are so glad that you loved it!

  • Squid

Delicious and easy. I would recommend doubling the onions and peppers just because the ratio of veggies to sausage is a little off if made as directed.

    Glad you enjoyed it!

This was an AMAZING sandwich! I'm vegan so I used Beyond Meat hot Italian sausages, vegan mayo and agave syrup for the honey. I also mixed up the sauce and combined it with half a bag of pre-cut cole slaw cabbage and made a slaw out of it. Put the slaw on the sandwich too. Using the sheet pan made everything quick and easy, with minimal clean-up. This will be my go-to hoagie recipe from now on!

Thanks Erin, that is so great to hear! Glad you loved it and were able to make it vegan, nice job!
