Italian Sausage Sandwiches: It’s Kinda All About the Sauce
The complete and total deliciousness of this Italian sausage hero comes at you from a lot of directions—the juicy roasted sausage, peppers and onions, the lightly-toasted hoagie rolls, and maybe most of all the creamy, lightly sharp sauce that coats everything. What makes the best Italian sausage sandwich sauce ever? Just four simple ingredients are all you need:
- Mayonnaise. Of course! What’s a meaty sausage sandwich without mayo?
- Whole grain mustard. We like both the look, texture and flavor of whole grain mustard—the kind that has visible mustard seeds in it.
- Honey. A hint of sweet is always a good call. It’ll bring out the natural sweetness of the bell peppers and onions.
- Soy sauce. Just a little bit for an umami burst.
