What Is A Club Sandwich?

Besides being one of my all-time favorite cold deli sandwiches, the classic club sandwich is a mainstay on many restaurants’ menus. If it happens to be a favorite of yours too, then you’ll be happy to know that with its commonplace ingredients (usually chicken or turkey, bacon, tomato, lettuce, and mayonnaise) it can be easily made at home.

What’s In A Club Sandwich?

Through my adult years, I've learned what sandwich ingredients I like to keep on hand at all times. You can never go wrong with having cooked bacon at the ready—you just never know when you might want to make an easy club sandwich! Here’s what else you will need to make our amped-up homemade club sandwich:

  • Oroweat Sandwich Thins rolls: Oh so hearty but soft!
  • Deli meat: Chicken or turkey are my favorites.
  • Tomato: Add it to keep it classic, ditch it if it’s not your thing.
  • Avocado: Lettuce is classic, but our very special TMP version of a classic club sandwich recipe swaps lettuce for avocado. You’ll be thanking us later.
  • Pesto mayonnaise: No secrets here, we think adding pesto to our mayo is the bee’s knees.

Why Is It Called A Club Sandwich?

Just a few fun background facts to discuss with your office mates while bragging about your lunch. As far as this American club sandwich goes, its history is a bit dodgy. It definitely emerged as a staple of American restaurants by the early 20th century, but exactly when, where and why it was first created—well, it’s hard to nail down. Here are three theories for you to mull over.

  1. Some claim the sandwich may have originated at the Union Club of New York City, as in "Have you tried a Union Club sandwich yet?”, which then simply became “club sandwich.”
  2. The sandwich was invented in an exclusive gambling club in the late 19th century.
  3. Rumors circulate that the “club” in club sandwich is an acronym. “Chicken - Lettuce - Under -Bacon”.

Club Sandwich Filling Ideas:

We recommend making this classic club sandwich recipe often. And once you’ve tried it our way a few times, we know you’ll want to put your own spin on it. You might like to revert back to more classic club sandwich ingredients by adding lettuce and using regular mayonnaise. Add other veggies if you have them on hand! Bell peppers or cucumbers anyone? Try a sundried tomato pesto or aioli! We’d love to hear how you made this sandwich your own!
