Iced (Bulletproof) Coffee, Anyone?

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, TMP IS NOT A HEALTH FOOD BLOG. However (and this is a big however) we are curious about healthy food, food trends and sometimes even incorporate them into our families’ diets when we think they’re worth it. Bulletproof coffee is one such trend, and we anticipate this keto-friendly fuel is here to stick around. We have loved making bulletproof coffee a part of our routine, so when OXO asked us to try out their cold brew maker, we knew exactly what we’d be making. Iced bulletproof coffee, the perfect summer coffee sipper.

Is Bulletproof Coffee Good for You?

There is actually a lot of controversy surrounding this subject. Some say its lack of calories fail to make the beverage a suitable meal replacement, while others swear by it’s weightloss powers as it can help send you into ketosis, which, if you’re following a low-carb diet, is the goal, as it is known to be a fat-burning mode.

With the obvious disclaimer that we are NOT DOCTORS and you should always check in with your healthcare provider before starting any sort of major dietary change, the idea is that the nutritional benefits of bulletproof coffee are that it:

  • Allows you to feel full without overeating in the morning.
  • Gives you energy and increases cognitive function.
  • Is a delicious alternative to breakfast if you aren’t a big morning eater.
  • Gives you mental clarity, especially if you are doing intermittent fasting.

Ingredients for Iced Bulletproof Coffee.

Below are the key ingredients used for our bulletproof coffee recipe. We’ve kept with the traditional elements, but for the sake of making everything more delicious, we’ve also added a few special ingredients that are also keto-friendly.

  • High Quality, Freshly Ground Coffee Beans
The key to good coffee is more than just good beans, it’s also in the grind. Grinding your own beans guarantees your coffee is not contaminated, it preserves the quality of the oil and it saves all that aroma that comes from freshly ground beans for your own home. For these reasons we love Oxo’s Conical Burr Grinder!
  • Cold brew coffee made from the OXO coffee maker
We love cold brew because it can be made ahead in large batches. Plus, who doesn’t like a cold drink on a warm day?
  • Grass-fed butter
Grass-fed butter is key to maximizing nutrients in this beverage. The healthier the cows, the healthier the butter they produce.
  • MCT oil or coconut oil
While coconut oil is a fine substitute in a pinch, MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil (can be found at most grocery stores or online) is flavorless and far more powerful in sending your body into that ketosis fat burning mode.
  • Canned coconut milk (TMP add on)
Canned coconut milk is not a traditional bulletproof coffee ingredient, but it is keto friendly and makes for an extra creamy, extra-filling drink.
  • Cinnamon and vanilla extract (TMP add-on, because...yum!)

How Do You Make Bulletproof Coffee?

Using OXO’s Cold Brew Coffee Maker we are able to make large batches of rich, strong, flavorful cold brew to keep on hand. It sits on your countertop and can be used to make your coffee the night before, and give you up to a week's worth of coffee concentrate with one brewing. Using this delicious brew as our base, we blend in grass fed butter, MCT oil, coconut milk, unsweetened vanilla and/or cinnamon, and ice and blend in a high powered blender.

The result is a frothy blended drink done in minutes, that jump starts your day and keeps you going for several hours to come. Keep in mind that fats turn into solids when blended. This drink tends to separate after a few minutes and should be enjoyed immediately after making. Stir often and enjoy!
