Nothing But The Basics: 3 Main Ground Beef Taco Ingredients
All you really need are three key ingredients to make these ultra-easy beef tacos. You probably can guess what they are but just in case, to make our beef taco recipe, you’ll at least need:
Beef. Look for an 80/20 (meaning 80% lean, 20% fat) ground beef mixture—you don’t want the beef to be too lean or it won’t crisp up.
Flour tortillas. We really love flour tortillas for beef tacos. Beef tacos are sort of a nostalgic food—they really take us back to the taco nights of our childhood, and the tortillas were always flour tortillas.
Taco seasoning. Of course! The key.
But tacos—and ground beef tacos especially—are all about the taco toppings, right?! Half the fun of taco night is laying out a million little bowls of toppings and letting everyone DIY their taco. Not only is it hands-on fun, it means fewer complaints since everyone can literally make their dinner exactly how they want it. So here are the toppings we always serve with ground beef tacos:
Sour cream
Shredded cheese
Shredded lettuce
Pico de gallo
Cilantro
How to Cook Ground Beef for Tacos
Some people add tomatoes or tomato sauce to their ground beef taco filling, but for our beef taco recipe, we’ve opted to let the beef itself be the dominant flavor here. And how do we do that? The key to cooking ground beef for tacos is pretty simple:
Use 80/20 ground beef. That 20% beef fat means tons and tons of flavor, because fat is where a lot of flavor lives. It also means...
Moist ground beef! Even as you fry up the beef in a pan, and get those lovely crispy edges that add such nice texture to your beef tacos, using 80/20 beef means that the ground beef doesn’t dry out as it cooks.
