Frankly, I’m not a huge math person. I understand that March 14th is pi day because it’s 3.14 and the number pi starts with 3.14 and then goes on and on for quite a while. Beyond that, well, let’s just say I excelled in my lit class and skipped algebra more often than I care to admit.
Pie, though, pie is my specialty! And I will take literally any excuse to serve up some pie! I love to eat sweet pies, I love to make savory pies. And on pi day, I LOVE the idea of making a savory pie for dinner followed by a sweet pie for dessert! Who doesn’t love a theme?
Apple Pie
If you make nothing else for pie day, make a classic apple pie! My recipe has a double crust and tastes like something your grandma would make. It’s particularly great with vanilla ice cream or a slice of cheddar cheese.
Key Lime Pie
It's still pretty wintery in the PNW on Pi Day, so key lime pie (which tastes like vacation) is a welcome treat. This recipe is super simple, and that buttery graham cracker crust with that silky lime filling? Yum.
Dutch Apple Pie
This apple pie recipe features a crumbly streusel topping and that’s what makes it so good! A little extra buttery, it’s like your favorite cinnamon coffee cake and a slice of great apple pie had a baby.
Peach Pie
Another summery pie that tastes like a visit to the height of summer, this one only works if you can find decent peaches. For any of these recipes, use my easy all-butter crust, or (shhhh) a store bought crust works fine if you’re in a hurry and need your pie stat!
Pumpkin Pie
There’s actually no rule that you can only have pumpkin pie at the holidays, it just feels like there is. You do not have to wait until November to make pumpkin pie again! Make it now! It’s one of the easiest pies there is, especially with a store-bought crust.
Bourbon Pecan Pie
I'm completely in love with the rich and nutty flavor of this pie. With a splash of whiskey, it really does taste like the South, and it's such a grown-up flavor, I usually don't have to fight the kids for the last slice. Serve with ice cream!
Steak Pie
Steak Pie is very British, so if you haven’t had it before, that’s not too surprising. It’s absolutely a treat, and something I love to make for special occasions.
Meat Pie
Savory pies are a one-pan meal that makes great leftovers and is easy to make ahead and rewarm. I call this "meat pie" because it actually uses two kinds of meat (beef and pork) for a juicy, rich filling that's to die for.
Vegetable Pot Pie
Vegetarians love savory pie, too! Store bought puff pastry is my trick for making this recipe come together really easily. A creamy sauce, loaded with veggies, means that everyone will be super satisfied and no one will miss the meat.
Lamb Pie
Lamb is a very traditional filling for meat pie, so this is a recipe I created to make a truly simple, classic savory pie. The flavor of lamb isn’t for everyone, but I like its rich and gamey flavor. That said, you can make this recipe using beef instead if you want to.
Chicken Pot Pie
Cozy, creamy and classic, chicken pot pie totally counts as a pi day treat! It’s a really easy meal to serve to a crowd, too, since it can be prepped ahead and relies on store-bought puff pastry. Easy peasy!
Frito Pie
If you're not a traditional pie person but want in on the Pi Day fun, may I suggest Frito pie? Rather than the classic hand-held version, I make mine in a casserole dish. It's just a lot more crowd-friendly, and I only make it for big crowds!
