Five Spice Chicken Sheet Pan Dinner

In my book, the best thing about sheet pan dinners is the time and energy they save in the midst of a busy day. There’s just something so lovely about pulling out a large sheet pan, dowsing your favorite proteins and veggies in olive oil, seasoning it with a plethora of deep, earthy spices, and then throwing the whole thing in the oven until carmely, crispy edges appear. It’s rustic, uncomplicated, real food, and it hits the spot, every time.

Being the big fans of sheet pan dinners with chicken that we are, we set out to create one using a new profile of spices. The results are a dish with intriguing, deep notes unlike any sheet pan dinner we’ve shared before. To accomplish this, we partnered with our favorite spice company Simply Organic because you cannot beat their five spice blend. Once you taste it smothered over your chicken, cabbage, and carrots, we can promise it will spark a moment of joy and remind you of all the reasons why you love to cook.

What is Five Spice Anyway?

The classic Chinese five spice is a blend—a combination of five powerhouse spices. Our favorite version is made by Simply Organic. Their pungent blend was developed to include all five tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and spicy. The result is a harmonious and exuberant experience for your tastebuds.

It’s made of:

  • Cinnamon
  • Fennel
  • Cloves
  • Star Anise
  • White Pepper

Use Five Spice Powder to Make One Incredible Dinner.

Our new favorite dinner begins with one of the mightiest (and underrated) tools you have in your kitchen. You guessed it...the humble sheet pan! These babies are good for so much more than baking cookies. Once you’ve got your pan on standby, you’ll want to:

  1. Pat the chicken dry with a paper towel and toss it on the sheet pan.
  2. Peel and cut your veggies and toss them on the the sheet pan, as well.
  3. In a small bowl mix the olive oil, honey, soy sauce, your magical five spice powder, garlic powder, and salt. At this point you might begin drooling, but just work through it.
  4. Pour the saucy mixture all over the chicken and veggies and put the sheet pan in oven.
  5. Bake all that goodness until it’s juicy, crispy, and filling your house with the heavenly scents of a homemade dinner.
  6. Remove from oven and sprinkle that goodness with green onions and crushed red pepper flakes.
  7. Enjoy!

How to Make Your Five Spice Chicken Sheet Pan Dinner a Roaring Success:

  1. Some sheet pan dinners can be made using a completely flat baking sheet, but I highly recommend using the kind that has a rim on it. This will help keep any juices in the pan and not let them spill over into your oven creating a smoky mess.
  2. Use high quality herbs and spices! Your food is ALWAYS going to taste better when you use fresh spices. Clean out your spice cabinets of all the outdated, tasteless seasonings and switch over to fresh Simply Organic spices. Once we gave our cabinets this simple makeover the flavor in our food improved dramatically.
  3. Spread out the ingredients on the pan and be careful not to overcrowd them. The less things touch one another, the crispier your final dish will be.
  4. Because we use high oven heat for this recipe (to get a good char on the cabbage) we recommend using skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs. Any chicken will work, but we love the extra flavor the skin produces.
  5. You can serve this dish on its own, but potatoes or rice make tasty accompaniments.
