A Back Pocket Mojito Recipe That’s Ready in Five Minutes!

Dreaming of a trip to Havana, Cuba? If you can’t make it to the birthplace of the mojito, you’ll love this easy mojito recipe with just five ingredients. Mojitos were reportedly Ernest Hemingway’s favorite cocktail, and even made an appearance in a James Bond film. With a star-studded past, this is one of our favorite rum-based drinks. What is a Mojito? A classic mojito recipe is fresh, minty, and made with rum. For more minty goodness, try our classic Mint Julep.

Gather These Mojito Ingredients Before Your Next Happy Hour

We’re serious when we say this is the easiest classic cocktail to make at home. We’ve even been known to take a cue from our favorite mixologist, who recommends smacking the fresh mint against the palm of your hand to release its aromatic properties. Now that you’re ready to start slinging cocktails like a professional, you’ll need the following ingredients to make the best mojito recipe:

  • Limes–about 1-2 fresh limes per mojito

  • Granulated sugar

  • Fresh mint leaves–this is the most important part!

  • Silver rum

  • Soda water

How To Make A Mojito

You’ll gently muddle the mint leaves until crushed (but not shredded!) to release the essential oils. You’ll sometimes see a mojito recipe with simple syrup, this is often a shortcut for bartenders because it doesn’t require extra effort to dissolve the sugar. We find that using regular granulated sugar is just fine for making mojitos at home. The best rum for mojitos is typically a white rum, which are more mild than dark rums that are aged longer. We use a silver rum (aka white or light rum) in ours because it doesn’t overpower the mint mojito.
