How to Make French Toast

4 slices of homemade French toast topped with sliced butter and maple syrup on a plate with a fork beside it
  • Serves:  4
  • Prep Time:  5 min
  • Cook Time:  20 min

Ingredients

  • 3 large eggs, beaten
  • ¾ cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for serving
  • 6 to 8 slices bread (We like white, wheat, brioche, French or challah)
  • Maple syrup, warmed, for serving

Method

  1. In a baking dish or shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, vanilla, and cinnamon until fully combined.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add the 1 to 2 tablespoons of butter, and cook until melted and foamy, but not browned.
  3. Working with one piece at a time, add the bread to the egg mixture; and let it soak for about 15 seconds, then flip and soak for another 15 seconds, or until the bread is wet. Add the bread to the melted butter and cook until golden brown, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate. Repeat with remaining slices of bread, adding the remaining butter 1-2 tablespoons at a time as needed.
  4. Serve the French toast hot with extra butter and maple syrup on the side.
