In case you haven't noticed, summer is a BIG deal here at The Modern Proper. Perhaps it's because both Natalie and I are true Northwesterners and the warmth of the summer sun just feels like such a treat. I also think in large part we love summer more than your average bears because we are idealists. I'll explain. One day, a long time ago, before TMP came to be, before husbands and kids, and a life of responsibilities, we both, separately but equally, experienced the glory of a perfect summer day. As a result, we now spend every June through early September chasing the beauty that is a hot day in a beautiful setting, working on our tans with a good book in hand and not a care in the world. It's pretty much what we both live for, only now that idyllic scenario includes kids happily splashing about in water, and because we are grown ups, an adult beverage. Of course.

...strawberry vodka radlers make for a light and thirst quenching alcoholic option...

Summer Radler with Strawberry Vodka

When Natalie and I first sat down to discuss our menu ideas for the month of July, we knew we wanted to create and share at least one great summer cocktail. Because, let's face it, when does the perfect cocktail not make every occasion better? We put our heads together and crafted this strawberry vodka radler, made with a light white beer and tart homemade lemonade. It's the best of all summer drinks combined. Because it isn't overly sweet or rich, it's delightfully refreshing and makes for a great “all purpose” drink at barbecues, dinner parties, and quiet afternoons sunbathing at the pool. Truly a great accompaniment for the “perfect summer day.

Does mixing beer, vodka and lemonade sound strange to you? We promise you it's not! If you've ever had beer margaritas you'll understand the genius of this cocktail. And if you've ever tasted a fresh lemon radler (known to some as a shandy), you are familiar with the delight that comes with mixing beer and lemonade. These strawberry vodka radlers make for a light and thirst quenching alcoholic option, and are a pleasant departure from your typical warm-weather drink offerings. So sit back, relax, and sip away at these babies while you still can, because we all known (as much as I like to deny it) summer won't be here forever.

Serves 6

Strawberry Vodka

1/2 pint strawberries stems removed
1 cup vodka
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (roughly 4 large lemons)
6 11.2 oz of Hoegaarden (or similar white or wheat beer), chilled in fridge for at least 24 hours

Method

  1. In a blender set to low, blend the vodka with the strawberries just until pureed. Using a fine mesh or cheesecloth lined strainer set over a bowl, strain the vodka. Place in the fridge to chill. (makes about 1 cup)
  2. To make the simple syrup, heat the water and sugar in a small pot on the stovetop over medium-low heat. Simmer just until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat. Add one cup of ice water to the simple syrup in the pan and pour into a heat proof container.
  3. Once the simple syrup is chilled, add the lemon juice.
  4. Keeping all components cold will ensure that your radler will be nice and refreshing!
  5. To make each drink, pour ½ a bottle of Hoegaarden into a pint glass, add to that ¼ cup of the strawberry vodka and ½ cup of the lemonade. Top with the other ½ of the beer. Garnish with a lemon wedge or strawberry and serve.
