If you are like us you’ve watched My Fair Lady over and over and over again. How could you possibly get sick of Audrey Hepburn made over into a Lady living the life dreams are made of? Well, maybe it wasn’t quite as glamorous as it looked, but boy did it look good. So desirable, that on our bucket list was finding a hat larger than life, and setting off to a day at the races.

Lucky for us, Portland Meadows just reopened their race track with an entirely new identity. So we put on our hats and our Sunday best and hoped for a little bit of luck. Our luck quickly ran out and our pockets were empty, but our stomach and taste buds were more than satisfied.

If you have never been the races, I suggest you find a way to get there. In the mean time you can put on a hat and sip a Mint Julep in the comfort of your own home.

Mint Julep

Serves 4

Ingredients

1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup fresh mint, coarsely chopped
2 cups Kentucky Bourbon
extra mint for garnish

Method

  1. Combine water, sugar and mint in a small sauce pan. Bring to a boil over high heat, until sugar dissolves. Allow syrup to cool. Pour cooled syrup through a fine mesh sieve to remove mint leaves. Set aside.
  2. When the time comes to prepare the Mint Julips, fill 4 tin cups with crushed ice. Pour 4 oz. Bourbon and 1.5 oz (or more to taste) mint syrup into each cup. Gently stir, enjoy.
