I did it. I successfully dropped my two children off at their first day of our co-op preschool. I am now sitting at a coffee shop recovering from the excitement and experiencing so many feelings. I’m a bit nervous, with a side of anxiousness, mixed with sheer excitement and relief to have a couple hours to myself a few times a week. Summer was full and we loved every minute of swimming and exploring, but we are ready for this transition; ready to welcome this crisp fall weather that has seemed to come so quickly, and ready for all the fall-cooking and baking we’ve been eagerly anticipating. Natalie and I have been scheming and dreaming of all the things we can create with the fresh crop of seasonal ingredients about to make their entrance. While it’s easy for me to get caught up in dinner planning, I realized I now also had to consider how to fuel up my little ones while they’re out…enter my first experience with school lunches (pinch me, time flies!).

When packing food to go in the past, I have always used typical lunch bags and filled them with food sealed in ziplock baggies or reusable sandwich pouches. Then I discovered a tupperware contraption with snap lids and separate compartments. It saved on waste, but wasn’t very aesthetic. Recently, in preparation for school beginning, we did some research and found something to really get excited about (if beautifully packed lunches thrill you like they do me)!

In our search, we discovered the world of stainless steel lunch boxes, and we will never go back. Planet Box and Lunchbots are the 2 companies that stood out to us for design and usability. They reduce waste, keep food fresh, and clean up wonderfully. We did a little test run with the Lunchbots “cinco” box and it received high marks from the kids as well. At the bottom of the post look for a sample menu of lunch ideas we prepared to help jumpstart your creative lunch making, and get those boxes filled!

Finally, to make planning and packing lunches even more fun this year, Natalie and I are so happy to announce that we have added what we are calling “Lunch Box Linens” to our Etsy shop. These linens come in a set of 5 plaid, 100% linen napkins measuring 16X16 inches. They’re the perfect size to pack and pair wonderfully with the stainless steel lunch boxes, and there’s one for each day of the week (no washing till the weekend, yay!).
