How to host a kentucky derby party

How to host a kentucky derby party

While this is a food blog, and most definitely not a party blog, it really is hard to separate the two, isn’t it? A party is the perfect time to host friends and family (something Natalie and I are so passionate about) and the best excuse to eat great food. We’ve gotten good at coming up with excuses to throw a good party and discovered along the way that nothing brings people together like a fun theme. Whether it be the Academy Awards, Mardi Gras, or Super Bowl, there is no reason to wait for a holiday to gather your loved ones together for a good time.

The rich dark chocolate, top notch bourbon flavor, and their classic, luscious caramel filling made for the perfect little bite...

When our kids were tiny, we were able to flex our love for themed parties fast and strong. Every birthday was a reason to go all out with coordinating decor and recipes that created the perfect pinterest worthy moment. But sadly (for us) as they’ve grown, our kids’ birthday desires lie less in beautiful tablescapes and more around swimming pools and jumpy houses (go figure). Natalie and I are have refused to let that steal our thunder, and fortunately for us the Kentucky Derby is right around the corner, giving us yet another reason to throw a party. If you’ve been following along with us from the beginning, you may remember we are big fans of the event. No, we don’t regularly follow horse racing, but any excuse to pretend to be southern and wear a ridiculously large hat is a good one in our book.

We took our inspiration for decor from symbols of victory; red roses, royal blue, and gold urns reminiscent of trophies laid the foundation for our table scape. When it came to food we stuck with tradition and served good bourbon and mint juleps, tea sandwiches, and an epic cheese board (because you know..CHEESE!), and for dessert we were thrilled to discover Ghirardelli just came out with a brand new flavor of their chocolate squares perfect for the occasion: dark chocolate bourbon caramel. The rich dark chocolate, top notch bourbon flavor, and their classic, luscious caramel filling made for the perfect little bite to compliment our strong drinks and hearty spread.

Thinking of throwing a Kentucky Derby party yourself? (Come on...you know you want to!) Grab yourself a bag of these Ghirardelli dark chocolate bourbon caramels, force yourself not to eat the entire bag right away, and then check out some of these recipes that were created to pair with them. Chipotle Lime Pecans & Virgin Mint Juleps from Oleander + Palm, Mini Bourbon Caramel Derby Pies from The Little Epicurean and Salted Caramel Old Fashioned from The Kentucky Gent. This Kentucky Derby we will be viewing the races from home, and whether you’re a “legit” horse fan or not, we encourage you to, as well. Seize the opportunity to create, eat great food, have some strong drinks, and enjoy the finer things in life surrounded by friends and family. You’ll be glad you did.
