The Modern Proper is quickly approaching it’s 4 year anniversary and although I am insanely proud of our blog and how far we’ve come as a small business in that time there’s just something that has never sat well with me, so I’m here to make things right. If you’re a regular reader you’ve likely wondered “where is the recipe for chocolate chip cookies?!” Every blogger seems to have one, right? Well, we are strong believers that “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” We see no point in trying to reinvent the proverbial chocolate chip cookie wheel when so many great recipes already exist for the classic. However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t share our favorites. And so, without further adieu, I bring you The Modern Proper’s top 6 all time favorite chocolate chip cookie recipes:

The “Award Winning Chocolate Chip Cookie” from allrecipes.com is perhaps the recipe closest to my heart. When I first began falling in love with being in the kitchen (circa 2003), I almost exclusively used allrecipes.com as a resource. Along my journey, I found this recipe for a chocolate chip cookie that called for a package of vanilla jello pudding mix to be added to the batter. There is just something special about the butter/pudding mix combo that produces a really unique and delicious cookie. If you’ve never tried it, I absolutely encourage you to do so. The vanilla flavor is really subtle, but the texture that results from the pudding mix is my favorite part. These cookies stay soft for days!

Next on the list is Ashley Rodrigues’ recipe from her amazing blog Not Without Salt. My husband and Ashley’s brother were roommates in college, so when Ashley started her food blog I quickly caught wind (it was one of the first food blogs I ever visited) of how amazing her chocolate chip cookie recipe was and began making it on the regular after that. These cookies call for turbinado sugar and receive a light sprinkling of sea salt before being popped in the oven...so good!

Last year, Natalie and I found ourselves in New York celebrating our “Saveur Magazine Blog Awards” nomination. We had just three short, whirlwind days to explore all of the great food that the city has to offer. It was fun and thoroughly exhausting! One of our quests involved finding the best cookies in the city, and we considered ourselves doubly successful when we finally made it to Levain Bakeryand Momofuku Milk bar. Both of these amazing shops boast some of the best cookies you may ever eat in your lifetime. When we returned home, I searched and found a Levain copycat recipe, and I am so glad I did. They are thick and tender thanks to the bread flour they’re made with, and melt in your mouth.

The Milk Bar cookies are thin and chewy with their own unique taste that comes from the addition of dry milk powder to the dough. Interesting and delightful.

The Best Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies from Pinch of Yum is yet another contender for “best chocolate chip cookie.” I legitimately fell in love at first bite. There is absolutely nothing I would change about them, and that’s really saying something. Perfectly melting the butter and not overbaking are important rules to follow when using this recipe, and if you do so you will be thrilled with the results!

Last, but definitely not least, is the famous NY Times Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe. I added this one to the list because honestly, I just wanted to know what all the hype was about. I only recently made these for the first time and I am truly sad by all the time I spent not making them, because they are perhaps my favorite. Made with both cake and bread flour, these cookies take some planning, because they need at least 24 hours to chill in the fridge. (I have even heard the cookies get progressively better the longer the batter chills.) Lots of work and prep, but IMHO this recipe has EVERYTHING I’m looking for in a chocolate chip cookie; buttery, chewy, crispy, and soft. Yes, there really are the best.

So there you have it, all of The Modern Proper’s favorite chocolate chip cookie recipes in one place. Now we can officially consider ourselves a legit food blog with that checked off our list! I hope you get a chance to work your way through the list yourself and discover which one is your fave and be sure to share your thoughts with us as you do.
